The Migration Heritage Project

To define, record, protect and promote migrant heritage in Wollongong and Illawarra.

The Migration Heritage Project is a community initiative designed to protect and promote the heritage of Illawarra's diverse cultural communities. The project aims to achieve this goal by linking with a wide range of communities, talking about the importance of protecting our heritage and providing the resources that groups and individuals need to record and celebrate their heritage.

Our achievements

• Curated and exhibited a selection of migration heritage items and stories in two separate exhibtions.

• Helped save the remaining buildings of the Fairy Meadow migrant hostel from destruction by working with the University of Wollongong. Known as the Nissen Huts, the buildings are now on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

• Documented exciting home movie footage that represents the experiences and lifestylse of the Illawarra migrant community.

• Conducted a Thematic Study on Post World War 2 Migrants.

• Developing a book to be published on how to document migrant history in the Illawarra.
  • Documenting Migration to Wollongong Publication (working title)

• Researching pioneers of the Illawarra from diverse cultural backgrounds from settlement to the1930s (pre World War 2).

• Provided content from the thematic study for an exhbition and a performance piece based on 'First Accommodation' during the 2009 Viva la Gong Festival as well as material for further research into the textile, clothing and footwear industry currently in its final stages.
