for the stockings and the shoes.
The 400 folds in the skirt represent the 400 years that Greece
was under Ottoman rule.
During the revolution Greek men wore this costume and it continues
to have great significance to all Greeks.
The stockings would originally have been covered by leggings
in the same fabric as the skirt.
